Everything is beautiful, posted by Nigel Campbell
I hope that people will realize that I am not attempting to upset anyone here.

I was just taking a walk today and passed by popupthis building and thought that it was beautiful. I think if we can learn to see beauty, whatever the context the world would be a better place.

A small muslim boy asked me what I was doing. "Taking Pictures" I replied. "Are you with the press?" he asked. "No, I just thought it was beautiful, so I took a picture." "Oh, ok...." then he frowned and looked at the mosque, I guess he'd never really looked at it that way before.

: Thanks for sharing your encounter with that boy, Nigel. The opening of minds is a two way street. When one human tells another they see beauty, they feel an instinctive desire to look again, to try and find the beauty they just passed by without noticing.

It's a human instinct to value.

Tarsh: It’s strange, when I personally see brose through someone else’s photographs; I often find beauty in things I had previously overlooked. And next time I pass such an object, building, etc, I end up admired what I once ignored.

DaShiv: Mosques have an elegant charm all their own, especially compared to their busy (in form) cathedral counterparts. I remember being completely fascinated by mosques when I first came across them in an art history class.

I have no idea what the symbols atop the steeples represent, but I'm sure it's not fire and rubble. Thanks for the picture.

Cari: Was the building a muslim church?

m: Isnt really a mosque. looks more like a temple. it has hindu symbols on top of each peak. om and trishul.
but, it surely is a beautiful building. where is this ?

Nigel Campbell: Yes it is a muslim church.

I'm new to this area, where I previously lived was very middle class and predominantly white, here the ethnic and social mix is far more diverse.

Thanks to everyone for the comments, I must admit I worried about posting that image, but somehow, I also felt driven to do it. I'm glad now that I did.

Sooraj: The picture is most certainly a Hindu temple. The symbols on top of the temple represent "Om" and the "Trishul" or Trident. These are sacred symbols of Hindus and hence this is a temple, not a mosque. There could absolutely be no confusion about this. Nigel, this is not a muslim church, but a Hindu temple.

Vijay: I am sure that when you do research it, you will find that your picture shows a Hindu Mandir, and the things ontop are symbols -
*the brass pots stacked ontop of eachother sybolise the Nectar of Immortality that is obtained by worshipping within
* the symbol shaped like a 3 is Aum, the hindu word for God and everything Divine
* the last thing is the Trident - the Trishul, a symbol of Destruction of evil qualities when you enter the place of worship

Vinayak: The picture of the building is a Hindu Mandir, not a Mosque..because if u look at the top you will see a symbol wich represents "Ohm" ... which is an Hindu symbol..

: Nigel,

I appreciate that you are not intentionally trying to offend anyone but referring to a hindu temple as a mosque may upset some people as would referring to a mosque as a hindu temple. I know we should look beyond the politics but then again we should also state the facts. As many others have pointed out the symbol on the dome is the hindu symbol "Aum" if the place of worship were a mosque it would have a Star and Crescent on the dome. Could you please tell me where this temple is? If the symbol had been any different it still is an amazing piece of architecture.
